Chinese Bird and Camellia Painting with Seal

Ink and color painting of a bird on a flowering camellia branch, mounted with brocade silk matting in a gilt frame; includes calligraphic inscription and red seal.

Description

Hand-painted in ink and color, this bird-and-flower composition captures a small brown and white songbird perched on a flowering camellia branch, its plumage rendered in fine detail against blooms in shades of coral, pink, and deep red with softly shaded green leaves. The work sits on a warm ivory ground and is presented within a wide border of dark green silk brocade patterned with a navy floral motif, all set inside a slim gilt-tone wooden frame. A column of black-ink calligraphy runs down the left side of the composition, accompanied by a red seal stamp beneath it. Signature/marking present as shown; attribution not verified. Inquire for details.

The reverse of the frame retains its original kraft paper backing and a sawtooth hanger for wall mounting. A stamped label reads “the artful frame galleries of fort lauderdale,” with a handwritten date of 29-03-88 noted beside it, indicating the piece was custom framed at that gallery in the late 1980s.

The silk or paper ground shows light overall toning consistent with age, along with a faint vertical crease near the top center and a small yellowish stain toward the lower edge. The frame and glazing are intact with only minor surface wear, and the brocade mat shows light handling marks near the corners.
