Description
Pair of original mid-20th-century pen-and-ink and gray wash cartoon drawings, each built around a school bus gag intended for magazine or newspaper syndication. One sheet is captioned “Newcomer” and shows a harried bus driver hauling a wailing boy aboard while his mother waves him off; the other carries the handwritten punchline “Wait! Wait! He overslept, waa-a-ait!” and depicts a boy dashing toward a departing bus past a tumbling woman. A signature reading Stan Fine appears within the second drawing. Both sheets are worked in black ink line with gray wash shading over paper stock, the loose, energetic style typical of commercial gag cartooning from this period. The verso of each sheet carries a rubber stamp reading “STAN FINE, 1128 E. Vernon Rd., Phila. 19, PA,” along with a typed title strip reading “School Bus” on one sheet and small red grease-pencil notations used for production or filing. Paper translucency lets the front image show faintly through on the back of each sheet.
Both sheets show even overall toning and edge browning consistent with age, along with scattered foxing and a stain near one corner of the second sheet. Small staple or pin holes are present along the top edge of both pieces, and corners show light handling wear. No tears, losses, or later restoration are visible.
