Carved Soapstone Giraffe Bookend Pair

Pair of hand-carved soapstone bookends featuring interlocking giraffe sculptures with etched coat patterns, finished in polished charcoal-black stone.

Description

Hand-carved soapstone bookends depicting a pair of giraffes, each interlocking base sculpted with a full-body giraffe figure standing on an oblong platform. The taller vertical panel of each piece slots against a shelf of books, while the giraffe forms extend outward and lean their necks together at the center, creating a connected scene when the two halves are placed side by side.

The stone is carved and finished in deep charcoal-black with the giraffe’s coat pattern etched in fine white linework to mimic natural markings, a technique common to African stone carving traditions. Each base has a naturally textured, unpolished underside typical of soapstone sculpture, while the visible surfaces are smoothed and polished to a soft sheen. No maker’s mark or signature is visible on either piece.

Both bookends are in solid, sturdy condition with no chips or cracks noted. There is light surface wear and scattered scuffing consistent with age and handling, along with faint dust and handling marks in the carved crevices. The white pattern lines show minor fading in a few areas but remain clearly defined throughout.
