Description
Carved from solid dark stone, this pair of bookends forms a single striding rhinoceros when pushed together, split neatly down the body so each half functions as a standalone bookend. The rhino is rendered in profile with a lowered head, two horns, alert ears, and a naturalistic stance on an oval base, giving the set real sculptural presence on a shelf or desk in addition to its practical use.
Each half has a flat vertical back panel that houses the books, tapering into the rhino’s rounded body and textured stone base. A faint incised mark appears on the horn area of one piece, and there is no visible manufacturer’s stamp or paper label anywhere on the set. The stone has a dense, matte-grey to black surface with natural lighter mineral streaking.
Surface wear consistent with age and handling is visible throughout, including light scuffing across the flanks and legs, small edge chips along the base perimeter, and scattered fine scratches on the horns and back panels. The stone shows a slightly mottled, uneven patina in places but no cracks, breaks, or structural instability.
