Carved from a single dense, dark hardwood block, this abstract sculpture captures a stylized family group through a series of intertwined, sinuous forms and pierced negative-space openings. Rounded, sphere-like heads of varying sizes sit atop looping, ribbon-like bodies that curl and wind around a central axis, creating a fluid silhouette meant to be viewed in the round. The piece stands on an oval wood base and reads as a modernist interpretation of figures gathered together, likely intended for tabletop or shelf display.
The wood has a fine, tight grain and a rich near-black tone typical of hand-polished tropical hardwood, with no visible maker’s mark, label, or signature on the piece itself. The underside of the base carries a small handwritten inventory number in white marker along with a few remnants of felt protective pads adhered to the wood, suggesting the piece was previously catalogued or displayed in a private collection.
The sculpture is in solid overall condition with a warm, well-maintained polished surface throughout. There is a small chip to one of the interior carved elements and light surface scuffing consistent with age and handling, along with minor adhesive residue on the base from old protective pads. No structural cracks or losses are present.
