Description
Carved from dense stone and finished in a deep charcoal black, this pair of elephant bookends captures each animal mid-stride, trunk raised and curled overhead, large ears flared to the side. Each figure stands on an oblong base with a flat vertical panel rising from the elephant’s back, sized to hold a stack of books upright on a shelf or desk. Signature/marking present as shown; attribution not verified. Inquire for details.
The underside of one base carries an incised inscription reading “ALOIS,” rendered in white-filled lettering against the black stone surface. Each elephant is carved fully in the round, with defined musculature through the legs and haunches, a ridged and textured trunk, and detailed ear folds; the flat mounting panels reach roughly to ear height so a book can rest securely against them.
Wear is light and consistent with age and handling. Small nicks and scattered white marks along the ears, trunk, and base edges expose a lighter grey stone beneath the black surface finish, and the underside of each base has a rougher, unpolished texture. No cracks, breaks, or significant losses are visible on either piece.
