Description

Hand-carved stone sculpture depicting a mother and child, worked in the Shona sculptural tradition popular from Zimbabwe. The piece is carved from a single stone with a rough, uncut natural outer edge left intact, framing a smoothly polished, open oval interior where the two abstracted figures embrace. The contrast between the raw, jagged stone silhouette and the dark, glassy-smooth polish of the carved figures is the defining visual feature of the piece.

The stone shows a warm rust-brown coloration along one edge that transitions into grey-green tones across the body, characteristic of the serpentine and related stones typically used in this style of carving. The figures are rendered in a simplified, rounded form — two heads leaning together inside a teardrop-shaped void — set atop a solid, unworked base that allows the sculpture to stand freely. No maker’s mark or signature is visible on the piece.

The sculpture is in solid, displayable condition with no chips or losses noted to the polished carving. The rough-hewn outer stone shows natural pitting and texture consistent with its uncarved state rather than damage, and the polished interior surfaces retain good sheen throughout.
