Description
Carved from solid dark stone, this pair of bookends forms a single walking rhinoceros when pushed together, split cleanly through the body so each half stands on its own as a functional bookend. The rhino is rendered in a simplified, stylized manner typical of African stone sculpture, with a lowered head, twin horns, articulated legs, and a heavy rounded base that keeps each piece stable on a shelf or desk. Each base is inscribed by hand with “M. Sithole,” repeated once per bookend, and a small stamped crest mark appears beside one of the signatures. The rhino’s ears hold pale, feathery inset accents set against the dark stone, adding a decorative contrast point to the carving. The two halves rejoin along a vertical seam through the torso, allowing the piece to function as a single sculptural object when not in use as bookends.
Surface throughout shows light overall dust and fine handling scuffs consistent with age and display, with the matte stone finish intact and no chips, cracks, or losses visible. The chalky white signature and stamp show light wear but remain legible. Both bookend bases sit flat and stable, and the pale ear inlays are secure with no visible lifting or damage.
