Description
Carved from a single piece of natural stone, this sculpture presents a stylized face rising out of an untouched, rough-hewn rock crown — the classic device of hard-stone carving traditions in which the sculptor lets part of the source stone remain wild while polishing the figurative element to a deep, glassy black. The face is rendered with almond-shaped eyes, a straight nose, and a slightly parted, banded mouth, framed by a wide headband and layered necklace, both carved in a raised, cross-hatched texture that reads as woven beadwork against the smooth dark skin.
The reverse and lower edge carry a faint incised inscription, possibly an artist’s mark or title, though the lettering is too worn and stylized to read with confidence.
