Description
Carved from dark serpentine stone in the Shona sculptural tradition of Zimbabwe, this piece presents an abstract family group – a tall parent figure with a rounded head embracing a smaller partner and child, their forms merging into a continuous looping silhouette that opens into a circular void near the base. The composition sits within a rough, unworked outer border of the same stone, left in its natural quarried state to frame the smooth, hand-polished black figures at the center. The reverse and underside of the stone retain a chiseled, ridged texture typical of hand-tool finishing, contrasting with the glossy hand-polished surface of the carved figures. A name reading “R NCUBE” is incised into the smooth stone base near the front edge. Natural mineral variegation runs through the rough outer stone, with warm rust-orange tones set against the grey-green body of the material.
The sculpture is in sound overall condition, with no chips, cracks, or losses to the carved figures. Light surface dust and a few small scattered pink marker or paint flecks appear on the rough stone surface, consistent with handling and studio storage rather than damage.
