Description
Four sheets of original pen-and-ink cartoon artwork make up this mid-century gag strip titled “Uniform of the Day,” rendered in black ink with gray wash over illustration paper, bearing the name Stan Fine. The sequence follows a boy through a series of costume changes and playtime scenes — cowboy gear and a stick horse, a run-in with two neighborhood kids dressed as astronauts, getting undressed at day’s end, and finally suiting up for street hockey with roller skates and a stick. Each sheet is numbered in red pencil (1, 2, 9, 10, 11, 12), indicating sequential panels from a larger strip.
One sheet carries a printed studio return-address label on the verso reading “STAN FINE / 1128 E. VERNON RD. / PHILA., 19, PA,” with the strip’s working title “Uniform of the Day” added by hand in colored pencil. A matching ink signature reading “Stan Fine” appears within the final hockey panel, lower left. Small pinholes and remnants of rusted staples run along the top edges of the sheets, consistent with production or submission proofing, and faint ghosted impressions of the reverse-side artwork bleed through the paper on each sheet.
Each sheet shows a rust-toned stain in the upper right corner along with general age toning to the paper, plus light edge wear, small creases, and scattered pinholes near the top margin.
