Carved from dense grey stone, this tabletop bust depicts an elderly bearded man with a deeply lined, expressive face. The carver has rendered every wrinkle across the forehead and cheeks, heavy brows, and deep-set eyes with careful attention, giving the piece a strong sense of individual character rather than an idealized or generic portrait. The beard is worked in short, textured strokes that continue around the jaw, and the bald scalp is covered in a dense field of small carved pits, likely meant to suggest closely cropped or textured hair.
The bust is mounted on a solid, angled base that flares out to the shoulders, allowing it to stand freely without additional support. A draped garment is carved diagonally across one shoulder and chest, incised with parallel ridged lines and retaining traces of a warmer reddish-brown pigment or natural mineral variation in the stone that contrasts with the grey-black tone elsewhere on the piece. No maker’s mark, signature, or foundry stamp is visible anywhere on the sculpture. A small blue paper tag remains adhered to the underside of the base, consistent with a prior sale or auction lot marking.
The stone shows an even, aged grey-black patina overall with lighter earthy tones breaking through in the carved recesses and along the draped garment.
