Description
Carved seated figure of an elderly bearded man, shown holding a round-bellied clay pot in both hands. The sculpture depicts fine facial detail – deep forehead creases, a full beard, tightly cropped curly hair – along with a loose, wrinkled work shirt with rolled sleeves and bare feet, all rendered in the round from a single block of material. The figure sits on a naturalistically carved tree-stump seat, giving the whole piece a grounded, storytelling quality typical of tribal figural carving.
The piece rests on an integral oval base with a rough, unfinished underside, where a stone-like grainy texture is visible along with faint old chalk inventory marks. No maker’s mark, signature, or foundry stamp appears anywhere on the surface. Three small felt pads have been affixed to the base to protect furniture surfaces when displayed.
The surface carries an even, dark aged patina with lighter tan striations showing through in the clothing folds and on the stump, consistent with handling and age. Wear is generally light and even, with minor surface nicks and natural material variation visible at the base and along the stump; no major losses or repairs are apparent.
