Description
Issued as a United States Note, this Series 1953 two-dollar bill carries the distinctive red Treasury seal and red serial numbers that mark it as legal tender backed directly by the government rather than a Federal Reserve Bank. Thomas Jefferson’s portrait sits centered on the obverse within an oval frame, flanked by the matching serial number A25705262A printed twice in red ink.
The note bears the printed signatures of Ivy Baker Priest, Treasurer of the United States, and George Humphrey, Secretary of the Treasury, along with the “Washington, D.C.” designation beneath the seal. The reverse features the classic green-ink engraving of Monticello, Jefferson’s Virginia estate, framed by ornate scrollwork and repeated “TWO” denominations in each corner. A small plate number 398 is visible near the right edge of the Monticello vignette.
The note shows genuine circulation wear consistent with its age, including a centerfold crease running horizontally across both sides, light toning and soiling around the edges, and a small triangular notch missing from the upper left corner. Faint pencil or pen notations are visible in the upper left margin of the obverse, and the paper retains its overall flexibility without any tears, tape repairs, or major staining.
