Description
Issued as a United States one-dollar Silver Certificate, this note was once redeemable for silver bullion on demand, back when paper currency was directly backed by precious metal rather than issued purely as fiat legal tender. The obverse carries the familiar portrait of George Washington framed in an ornate oval, with the blue Treasury seal and blue serial numbers marking it as a Silver Certificate rather than a Federal Reserve Note.
The note is printed “SERIES 1957 B” and bears the printed signatures of Kathryn O’Hay Granahan, Treasurer of the United States, and C. Douglas Dillon, Secretary of the Treasury. Serial number X40120357A appears twice on the face, and the reverse displays the standard green ONE DOLLAR design with the Great Seal of the United States on one side and the pyramid and eye motif on the other, along with “IN GOD WE TRUST” across the center.
The note shows genuine circulation wear, including overall toning and yellowing of the paper, a visible fold line running through the center, and light soiling consistent with age and handling. A small paper price tag has been affixed to the face of the note near the portrait, and there is minor edge softening typical of a note of this vintage.
