Description
Hand-carved from dense dark stone, this abstract sculpture depicts two interlocking figures rendered in the fluid, biomorphic style associated with Zimbabwean stone carving traditions. Two rounded heads emerge from a continuous ribbon of curved, looping stone that reads as a mother cradling a child, with open negative spaces cut through the body of the piece to accentuate its sinuous, sculptural silhouette. The sculpture stands on a rounded rectangular base and is designed as a freestanding tabletop or pedestal piece.
The stone has a deep charcoal-black surface with scattered lighter speckling and small mica-like inclusions visible under close inspection, consistent with hard carving stones commonly used in this sculptural tradition. The underside of the base is left unpolished, showing the natural rougher stone surface, and carries a small blue paper inventory tag marked “07.” No maker’s signature or foundry mark is visible on the piece.
Overall the sculpture is in solid, stable condition with no cracks or losses. The polished surfaces show minor scattered pitting and small natural mineral flecks inherent to the stone rather than damage, and there is light general handling wear consistent with a carved stone object of this type.
