Description
Carved from dense grey-black stone, this pair of Art Deco style elephant bookends captures each animal mid-stride with trunk raised high and ears flared outward. The bookend form is worked directly into the elephant’s rounded back, splitting the body into two solid slabs that stand flush against a shelf of books while the sculpted legs, trunk, and head project forward in full relief.
Each piece is left unmarked, with no visible maker’s stamp or foundry mark on the base or body. The stone has a soft, matte mottled surface typical of hand-finished carved stone decor from the period, and the underside of each block is flat-cut to sit level on a shelf or desk. The book shown propped against one bookend is a reference title used for scale and is not included with the sale.
Both bookends show light handling wear consistent with age, including scattered fine scratches and scuffing across the flat base surfaces. A small printed inventory label remains adhered to the underside of one piece. No chips, cracks, or losses are visible on either sculpture.
