Description
This pair of cold-cast bronze bookends comes from The Bradford Exchange’s “Semper Fi: History of the Marine Corps” collection, fifth edition. One figure depicts a World War I-era Marine in doughboy helmet and puttees, rifle raised over his shoulder, backpack and canteen pouches at his belt. The other shows a Vietnam-era Marine wearing crossed ammunition belts, gripping an M60-style machine gun. Each soldier stands atop a rough-hewn earthen mound cast in gilt bronze finish, set on a black textured base inscribed in gold lettering with lines from the Marine Corps hymn — “We fight our country’s battles in the air, on land, and sea” on one, “We are proud to claim the title of United States Marine” on the other.
The underside of one base carries the maker’s label confirming this as an officially licensed product of the United States Marine Corps, produced by The Bradford Exchange as part of the cold-cast bronze collection, limited to an edition of 295 casting days and hand-numbered on this example (No. A1379). The figures and bases are cast in a bronze-toned resin composite typical of the cold-cast bronze process, designed to function as a matched set of decorative bookends.
Both figures retain crisp detail throughout, with the gilt bronze finish intact on the uniforms, weapons, and equipment. The black bases show light surface scratching and faint scuff marks, visible under close inspection but not affecting the inscribed lettering or overall presentation.
