Description
Standing carved figure depicts a Japanese peasant or woodcutter mid-stride, a hatchet tucked through his sash and a heavy bundle of kindling wood strapped across his back alongside a cluster of round red fruit, likely persimmons. He wears a patterned robe decorated with small mon-style crest motifs, a dark cap, a woven under-layer at the collar, and straw sandals, his face carved with a broad, good-humored smile and deeply lined features. The piece stands on its own integral round foot and is designed as a tabletop okimono-style display carving rather than a functional object.
The figure is worked from a dense, pale, tightly grained carved material with dark-stained accents used for the cap, sash ties, and footwear, and the fine crosshatching and crest patterns are incised and inked directly into the surface. The underside of the base bears a small red seal-style mark within a rectangular border along with a later paper inventory sticker marked “1#.” Signature/marking present as shown; attribution not verified. The piece shows scattered surface soiling and darkening in the carved recesses consistent with age and handling, along with light nicks to a few of the raised edges of the drapery and firewood bundle.
