Description

Hand-carved from dense dark hardwood, this decorative box depicts three elephants of graduating size walking single-file across a gently curved, bridge-like lid, each trunk reaching toward the tail of the elephant ahead in the traditional linked procession pose. The lid sits atop a wave-carved base with a scalloped, open underside that echoes rolling water, and a visible seam around the top edge indicates the elephant plank lifts free of the base below, suggesting practical use as a trinket or keepsake box in addition to its sculptural appeal.

Each elephant is finished with small pale inset accents at the eyes, toenails, and tusks against the ebonized wood body, giving the carving lifelike detail and contrast. A small oval maker’s or workshop stamp is impressed into the underside of the base, though no brand name or country of origin is legibly visible. The piece has no visible hardware such as hinges or clasps, relying instead on a friction-fit lid.

The carving shows light overall wear consistent with age and handling, including minor surface scuffing to the wood finish and light rubbing to some of the raised edges on the base. The pale inset accents remain intact with no visible chips or losses, and the piece shows no signs of repair or structural damage.
