Description
Carved from a single dense, dark hardwood, this sculpture depicts a seated greyhound-type hound with an elongated neck and head thrown sharply back, jaws open as if mid-howl or roar. The pose is dramatic and stylized, with the front legs planted firmly on an oval wood base while the haunches curl beneath the body, weight resting on one raised paw. The carving captures the animal’s lean, sinewy build with long ribs and taut muscle lines running along the flank.
No maker’s mark or signature is visible anywhere on the piece. The base is a simple raised oval plinth carved from the same block as the figure, with individually defined toes and claws worked into the front paws. Tool marks are visible throughout the coat and musculature, and the wood grain runs continuously through the body, neck, and head, indicating the whole figure was worked from one piece of timber. The stylized, elongated form and open-mouthed pose are consistent with Art Deco animalier sculpture.
The piece shows a visible crack running along the seam of the base, and there is minor chipping to both ear tips. The wood surface has lighter, mottled patches where the dark finish has worn or oxidized unevenly, particularly along the back and haunch, consistent with age and handling. The carving remains structurally intact and displays well despite this surface wear.
