Description
Carved from dense dark stone and finished to a soft polish, this bust depicts a bearded elder in quiet contemplation, one hand resting beneath the chin and the other raised to hold a curved horn-shaped implement near the face. An arched loop rises from the crown of the head, functioning almost like a handle above the figure, while the sculptor has left contrasting bands of raw, pale, granular stone across the scalp and beard to set off the smooth, dark polish of the face and torso. The name “JOSEPH PHIRI” is incised into the stone near the base of the piece, consistent with the practice among Zimbabwean stone sculptors of signing work directly into the material rather than through a separate label or plaque. Facial features are deeply undercut, with drilled pupils, a carved ear, and articulated fingers on both hands, and the bust sits on a naturally flattened stone base rather than a separate plinth, allowing it to stand freely as a tabletop or shelf piece.
The sculpture is in solid, stable condition overall, with light general surface wear consistent with age and handling. There are small nicks and minor chipping along the raised loop and horn element, plus scattered faint scuffing and a few pale abrasion marks across the shoulders and torso where the dark polish has been lightly disturbed.
