Description
Slender double-edged steel blade tapering to a fine, needle-like point pairs with a closely fitted wood-core scabbard, both hilt and sheath wrapped edge to edge in continuous spiral bands of gilt repoussé metal. The narrow profile of the blade points to a ceremonial or status weapon rather than a combat blade, the kind carried in processions or worn as a mark of rank within a Southeast Asian tribal tradition.
The decoration runs in a tight spiral down the full length of both hilt and scabbard, alternating gilt panels of incised scrollwork and triple-spiral (volute) motifs with narrow bands of black and red lacquer. The scabbard tip is capped in a small metal ferrule, and the hilt meets the blade at a short reinforced collar with no separate crossguard. No maker’s marks or inscriptions are visible on the piece.
The gilt surface shows scattered wear and rubbing consistent with age and handling, with small losses in the lacquer exposing the wood substrate beneath in places. The blade carries an even oxidized gray patina with light surface pitting along its length, and the scabbard’s end ferrule shows edge wear. The hilt wrap remains structurally sound throughout.
