Description
Carved from a solid piece of stone, this Zimbabwean Shona sculpture depicts two abstracted figures – a mother and child – nestled within a rounded, teardrop-shaped opening carved through the center of the stone. The larger figure curves protectively around the smaller rounded form, a motif rooted in the Shona sculptural tradition of Zimbabwe, where carvers work directly from raw stone into flowing, minimalist human and family forms. The piece retains its natural, unworked stone texture along the outer edges – pitted, mineral-flecked grey and rust-toned rock – which frames the smoothly carved and polished dark interior figures, a contrast technique typical of this style of stonework. An inscribed signature reading along the lines of “N. Tshuma” runs across the lower front edge of the base, scratched directly into the raw stone surface. No maker’s label, gallery tag, or accompanying paperwork is present.
The sculpture is in solid, stable condition overall, with the polished interior surfaces showing a smooth, unblemished finish. A fine natural fissure runs along one side of the raw stone exterior, consistent with the stone’s mineral composition rather than damage from handling. No chips, losses, or repairs are visible on the carved figures or the surrounding stone.
