Carved Stone African-Style Bust Sculpture

Hand-carved dark stone bust sculpture with a textured, pebbled cap contrasted against a smoothly polished face, neck, and shoulders — a striking tabletop piece in the African carving tradition.

Description

Carved from a single block of dense dark stone, this tabletop bust captures a stylized human head and shoulders with a smoothly polished face, neck, and torso set against a deliberately roughened, pebbled texture across the crown of the head meant to suggest closely cropped hair. The contrast between the glassy dark finish and the pale, granular surface of the “cap” is a hallmark of this carving technique, giving the piece strong visual texture from every angle. A raised line is carved around the neck and shoulders, suggesting a simple necklace or collar.

The sculpture rests on a squared, block-like base that flows directly from the shoulders, with no visible seams or added mounting hardware — the whole piece appears to be worked from one stone. There is no maker’s mark, foundry stamp, or signature anywhere on the surface; the only markings present are a small handwritten inventory notation and adhesive dot stickers on the underside of the base, consistent with prior cataloging or auction handling rather than any manufacturer identification.

The piece shows a few small surface losses where the dark polished layer has chipped away to reveal lighter stone beneath, visible near the nose, upper lip, and chin. Otherwise the carving remains crisp, with the textured cap intact and no cracks, losses, or repairs to the base or torso. Overall wear is minor and consistent with a well-handled decorative object.
