Stone Bust with Joseph Phiri Signature

Hand-carved stone bust of a stylized male figure with a curved horn-like headdress and richly textured beard, bearing a carved “Joseph Phiri” signature on the base.

Description

Hand-carved from dense dark stone, this sculptural bust depicts a stylized male figure with an elongated cranium, deeply set eyes, and a strongly projected jaw wrapped in a richly textured, rough-carved beard. A dramatic curved horn-like element rises from the crown of the head, its pale, unpolished surface contrasting sharply against the glossy dark finish of the rest of the piece. The figure’s shoulders taper into a solid base, giving the piece a stable, freestanding presence suited to a shelf, mantel, or display pedestal.

The base bears a carved signature reading “Joseph Phiri.” Signature/marking present as shown; attribution not verified. Inquire for details. The sculpture combines a smooth, polished stone surface across the face and torso with a deliberately roughened, granular texture on the beard and horn, a common decorative technique used to create visual and tactile contrast within a single stone piece. No additional maker’s labels, stamps, or paperwork accompany the piece.

The sculpture shows scattered light surface marks and small areas of pale scuffing across the shoulders and the crown of the head, consistent with handling and age. A small chip is visible at the tip of the curved horn element, and minor nicks appear along the textured beard area. The base shows light surface wear typical of a stone object that has stood on display.
