Description
United States two-dollar bill from Series 1953 features a red Treasury seal and red serial numbers, denoting its status as a Legal Tender Note rather than a Federal Reserve Note. The obverse carries the portrait of Thomas Jefferson at center, while the reverse displays an engraving of Monticello, Jefferson’s Virginia estate, printed in green ink.
The note is signed by Ivy Baker Priest as Treasurer of the United States and by a Secretary of the Treasury, both printed signatures standard to the series. Serial number A40384198A appears in red at upper right and lower left on the face, with the plate number D7 and check letter D visible in the corners. Text along the top reads “This note is legal tender at its face value for all debts, public and private.”
The note shows genuine circulation wear consistent with its age, including visible creasing, a horizontal centerfold, soft corners, and light overall toning to the paper. A small edge nick and faint surface soiling are present near the top margin, and the reverse shows a small hole near the top edge. No tears, tape repairs, or writing are evident beyond the printed text and seal.
