Description
Cast in the stylized geometric form popular during the Art Deco period, this pair of bookends depicts a trotting elephant split down the center, trunk raised and curled at the tip, large fan-shaped ears, and a confident forward stride. Each half stands on its own oval base, and the two sections interlock to form a single continuous animal when pushed together, with a stepped rectangular column at the rear serving as the actual bookend support. The dark, matte brown-black surface gives the pair a heavy, sculptural presence well suited to a desk or shelf.
No maker’s mark, foundry stamp, or brand name is visible anywhere on the piece. The underside of each base has a small “X” scratched into the raw material, which shows a lighter, grainy tan-gray tone quite different from the dark exterior finish. The book shown in one photo is included only to illustrate scale and is not part of this listing.
Both bookends are in good used condition with an overall dry, slightly rough surface consistent with age. There is light surface abrasion and small areas of lighter discoloration scattered across the bodies, along with minor edge wear at the base corners; no cracks or losses are present.
