Description

Carved from solid black stone and shaped as a pair of walking zebras, this bookend set is designed with flat vertical backs that hold books upright while the sculpted animal bodies extend outward as visual counterweights. Each zebra is fully modeled in the round, with a lowered head, articulated legs, and a short tail, and the pair is meant to be displayed facing outward as bookends or as a matched decorative object on their own.

The stripes are rendered in white pigment worked into shallow carved grooves across the body, mane, and face, contrasting against the polished black stone beneath. The undersides are flat, unpolished stone left in a raw finish, and each base carries a small handwritten number scratched into the surface, likely an old inventory or matching mark. No maker’s mark, label, or country-of-origin stamp is visible on either piece.

Both bookends show typical handling wear for carved stone decor of this kind: scattered small chips along the carved edges and ears, a visible hairline crack near one zebra’s head, and light surface scuffing and dulling to the black stone finish.
