Carved Stone African Bust Sculpture

Hand-carved dark stone bust sculpture with a naturally textured stone crown, depicting a stylized human head and shoulders in classic African carving style.

Description

Carved from a dense, dark stone, this bust sculpture depicts a stylized human head and shoulders in the tradition of African stone carving, likely soapstone or serpentine. The polished, near-black surface of the face and torso contrasts sharply with the natural, unpolished light-grey texture left on the crown of the head, mimicking short cropped hair. The facial features are rendered with confident, deep carving: heavy-lidded eyes, a broad nose, full lips with incised detail, and prominent ears set close to the head.

The figure is presented in classic bust form, with a squared, tapering base that flares out into rounded shoulders and a subtle collar or necklace line carved around the base of the neck. There is no visible maker’s mark, signature, or foundry stamp on the piece; it appears to be an unsigned decorative carving typical of mid-to-late 20th century African stone sculpture production.

The piece is in solid overall condition with a good polish retained on the face and torso. The base shows light chipping and small surface losses along the front and side edges, consistent with age and handling, along with minor scattered nicks to the stone. No cracks or structural damage are visible.
