Description
Wood engraving print pairs a winged, flower-crowned angel offering a heart and dove against a tangle of military hardware below – rifles, grenades, ammunition belts, a helmet, and a bandolier – with the date ’72 worked into the black block and a small four-way arrow-cross device in the lower corner. Signature/marking present as shown; attribution not verified. Inquire for details. Printed almost entirely in black ink, the single red heart is the only touch of color in the composition, giving the piece a stark, poster-like graphic quality typical of Vietnam-era protest imagery.
Mounted beneath the print, within the same frame, is the carved engraving block used to produce the image – the source matrix, showing the composition reversed and retaining visible tool marks from the carving process. A pencil signature reading “Fritz Eichenberg” appears on the paper mount below the printed image. The whole is housed in a black lacquered frame with a silvered inner lip, set behind glass with a cream-and-brown double mat, and fitted on the reverse with a kraft paper dust cover, wire hanger, and screw-mounted backing plate.
The printed paper shows light overall toning consistent with age and a faint mat line at the edges of the image. The engraving block displays expected wear from printing use, including residual ink tone, small edge nicks, and surface scuffing. The kraft paper backing on the frame has several tears and small areas of loss, though the frame, glazing, and hanging hardware are all intact and sound.
