Hand-carved from a single piece of stone, this sculpture presents an openwork scene of African wildlife — an elephant, warthog, leopard, rhinoceros, and buffalo — nestled together within a naturally shaped stone ring. The rough, unworked outer edge of the stone has been left in its raw state, its reddish-brown and grey mottled surface contrasting sharply with the smooth, deep black polish of the carved animal figures inside. The leopard’s coat is rendered with fine incised spotting, while the elephant’s trunk curls dramatically overhead, giving the composition real depth and movement despite its compact form. The reverse of the piece reveals a deliberate hatched, striated texture cut into the negative space around the animal forms, adding visual interest to what would otherwise be a plain stone back. The sculpture is freestanding, with a flattened base carved to allow it to sit upright on a shelf or table without additional mounting. No maker’s plaque, foundry mark, or printed label is visible; a faint carved inscription appears along the lower edge of the stone but is not legible enough to attribute to a specific carver.
The piece is solid and stable with no cracks through the body of the stone. The raw outer rim shows natural pitting and small chips consistent with the quarrying and hand-finishing process rather than damage from use, and there is light surface dust residue in the crevices of the carving typical of stone sculpture that has been displayed rather than kept in a case. The polished black surfaces retain good luster with only minor scattered scuffing.
