Description
Issued as a United States Note under the Series of 1963, this $5 bill carries the distinctive red Treasury seal and matching red serial numbers that mark it as Legal Tender rather than a Federal Reserve Note. The obverse features the familiar portrait of Abraham Lincoln framed in an oval, while the reverse displays an engraving of the Lincoln Memorial in green ink, a design carried over from earlier large-size and small-size note traditions.
The note bears the serial number A53459266A, with the Washington, D.C. issuing line printed above the Treasury seal. The signatures of Kathryn O’Hay Granahan, Treasurer of the United States, and C. Douglas Dillon, Secretary of the Treasury, appear in their designated fields, consistent with the printed 1963 series date. Standard border scrollwork, denomination counters, and the Federal Reserve-style legal tender clause run along the top of the note.
The bill shows genuine circulation wear, including visible creasing and fold lines across both the horizontal and vertical axes, along with scattered rust-colored foxing spots concentrated near the upper right and lower right corners of the obverse. The paper has toned to a light tan with age, and the corners show mild softening typical of a note that has passed through many hands. It is currently housed in a protective plastic sleeve.
