Carved Stone African Bust Sculpture

Hand-carved stone bust sculpture featuring an intricately braided hairstyle and textured garment, mounted on a faceted display base with felt protective pads.

Description

Carved from solid stone, this bust sculpture depicts a stylized African figure with an elaborately braided hairstyle swept into a high bun, rendered in deep relief with fine parallel grooves. The face is carved with attention to naturalistic detail – heavy-lidded eyes, defined brows, a straight nose, and full lips – giving the piece a quiet, contemplative expression. The garment below the shoulders carries an incised chevron and linear pattern that continues around the back, adding textural contrast to the smooth planes of the face and neck.

The stone itself is a mottled grey-brown with natural veining running through the surface, typical of hand-carved decorative sculpture from Southern Africa. The sculpture has a faceted, angular base designed for tabletop display, and the underside has been fitted with four small felt pads to protect furniture surfaces; a small paper tag marked “Eb” is affixed to the base, appearing to be an inventory or lot marking rather than an artist’s signature.

A visible crack runs across the forehead and down through part of the hairline, and there is a chip with a small loss to the upper portion of the carved hair bun. Surface wear includes scattered small nicks and lighter tan patches where the stone’s natural coloring shows through the darker grey surface, consistent with age and handling. Overall the piece remains structurally stable and displays well despite these condition issues.
