Carved Stone African Tribal Bust Sculpture

Carved stone African tribal bust sculpture with a polished black finish, raised coiled headdress, and contrasting natural-textured stone accents at the crown and jaw; incised signature to the base, attribution unverified.

Description

Carved from solid stone and finished to a deep, near-black polish, this bust captures the head and shoulders of a stylized African male figure with striking presence. The coiffure sweeps upward into a dramatic looped horn or plume shape rising well above the crown, while the face is rendered with deep-set eyes, heavy ridged brows, a strong nose, and pierced, coiled ears carved in fine relief. A carved collar or beaded necklace detail wraps the base of the neck, and the piece is mounted on a solid, squared pedestal base suited for tabletop or shelf display. Signature/marking present as shown; attribution not verified. Inquire for details.

The sculptor has left portions of the stone in its natural, unpolished state — most notably across the crown of the head, the looped headdress, and a circular patch at the jaw and chin — creating a granular, stippled texture that contrasts sharply against the glossy black polish of the face, neck, and torso. This two-tone treatment is typical of stone sculpture from the Shona carving tradition of southern Africa. The underside of the base carries an incised inscription, likely a maker’s signature or workshop mark, scratched directly into the stone.

The piece is in solid, well-preserved condition overall. There is light surface wear and scattered fine scratching across the polished black stone, along with minor edge nicks to the raised horn/plume element. The raw-textured stone areas show natural granular variation and small embedded mineral flecks consistent with the quarried material, with no losses or repairs evident.
