Description

Carved stone bust captures a bearded man wearing a fitted cap and headband, his features rendered with striking realism — deep-set eyes, a furrowed brow, and a full beard carved with fine ridged texture. The sculpture uses two contrasting finishes on a single stone: a coarse, sand-textured beige surface for the cap and beard, set against a smoothly polished reddish-purple stone for the face, ears, neck, and draped shoulders. This kind of dual-texture stone carving is closely associated with Southern African sculptural traditions, where artists exploit natural color bands within a single piece of stone to separate hair, headwear, and skin visually.
